Mountain Lion Hunts

About the Big Cat

Cougar, Panther, Mountain Lion, Puma or León. Whatever you choose to call him, he is the same animal. He is the most widely distributed predator in the Western Hemisphere, and the Big Horn Mountains is a prime territory for this big cat's range. He currently extends his range from south Alaska to the southern tip of South America, and from the east coast to the west coast of each continent...the predator is currently extending his range and multiplying.

Mountain Lion prey primarily on large ungulates, such as deer & elk, although they will have an appetite for game birds and large rodents. The mountain lion is similar to its not so distant cousin, the common house cat, in his ability to reproduce very quickly and efficiently. The gestation length on these large cats is 93 days, with most females bearing two to four young annually.

How do we hunt them?

We do employ tracking dogs to hunt the great cat. William Shakespeare, George Washington and Theodore Roosevelt all rode to the hounds. The tradition of man and dog hunting continues today. The dog, man's best friend, adds another dimension to any hunt. This is probably where the term "a fair chase" was born. The quarry does have an opportunity to escape and the strongest and smartest often do. Often the treed mountain lion is not taken, but left wiser from the experience, and what a great time to film the great cat from close. With dogs, the degree of selectively is very high and crippling and wounding losses are almost nonexistent. The sport is in the hunt, the things seen and done along the way. A hunt for the big cat is one of the most physically demanding and rewarding of all hunts.
