Golden Trout
Oncorhynchus aquabonita
The golden trout is native to the South Fork of
the Kern River in California. Golden trout have been introduced to Wyoming
primarily in alpine lakes. There are currently a few lakes in Wyoming
managed for golden trout, several of which reside in the Cloud Peak Wilderness
of the Big Horn National Forest. Golden trout in high lakes often feed for
only very short periods during the day, so the successful fisherman must spend a
lot of time to make sure he's on the the water at the right time. Golden
trout are distinguished from cutthroats by the absence of basibranchial teeth
and white border on the pelvic and anal fins. They are distinguished from
rainbow by the lack of spotting on the front of the body. You will k now
it when you catch as golden, as you have never caught a fresh fish with as
brilliant of colors as the Golden trout.
These trout flourish at elevations above 10,000
feet. Few people get to catch these brilliant trout let alone get to the places
they inhabit. This is usually the highlight of our guests stay.
Nymphing works best in July, while August and
September offer some of the best dry fly action you will ever experience.
